Learn how digital imaging, intraoral scanning and in-house 3D printing can support assessment, treatment planning and the production of selected dental appliances.
Cone Beam Computed Tomography, usually called CBCT, creates three-dimensional images of the teeth, jaws and surrounding structures. These images may provide additional information that is not available from a standard two-dimensional dental radiograph.
A CBCT scan may be recommended for selected dental implant, root canal, orthodontic or surgical cases where three-dimensional information would assist assessment or treatment planning. It is not required for every patient or every procedure.
Before recommending a scan, the clinician will consider whether the expected diagnostic benefit justifies the exposure and will use an appropriate scan area for the information required.

Digital scan data can be used to design selected dental models, surgical guides, retainers and other appliances. Where appropriate, our in-house 3D printers allow parts of this process to be completed at the practice.
What can be produced digitally depends on the proposed treatment, the material required and the clinician's assessment. Some restorations or appliances may still be made by an external dental laboratory.
Using a connected digital workflow may help reduce production stages and support communication between the clinician, patient and laboratory.

An intraoral scanner uses a small handheld device to capture a digital representation of the teeth and bite. The scan can be viewed on screen, helping the clinician assess selected concerns and explain the proposed treatment.
Digital scans may be used when planning clear aligners, crowns, bridges, retainers, night guards and other appliances. In many cases, they can reduce the need for traditional impression material, although a conventional impression may still be appropriate for some treatments.
The time required and the way the scan is used will depend on the treatment being planned.
